15 of Maribyrnong College's finest soccer girls from years 7, 8 and 9 made their way up to Newcastle for the 2017 Bill Turner Cup.
Our girls finished 4th out of 400 school teams that entered the competition, and were the first Victorian team to ever reach the final four.
The semi-final match played against Hunter Sports was an amazing game of football with Hunter taking the lead 10 mins before the half time break. Not to be outdone, Maribyrnong fired back an equaliser just before the half time whistle complements of Georgie Richardson. The game remained in deadlock for the next period thanks to some amazing goal keeping by Sienna Gidari pulling of 3 crucial saves in the second period forcing the game into extra time against the 6-time champion school.
While our girls matched the strength of the Hunter sports team in extra time, the opposition were able to get one into the back of the net winning the game 2-1.
The final game was a playoff for third and fourth this time against Cavendish Road from Brisbane. With two early goals on the scoreboard for Cavendish Road and a full complement of year 7 girls on the pitch, the task became just too difficult for our girls who lost the playoff 5-0.
Coach Arthur Papas says he was wrapped with the performance of our young team.
" I'm very proud of the achievement of our girls to become the first Victorian team to reach the final 4 stage of this tournament. They didn't have much left in the tank after the semi-final game against Hunter Sports. We were hoping for a thriller in the playoff against Cavendish but it wasn't to be."
Papas is confident that the future is bright of this group of girls.
"We retain most of our squad for next year as around 50% of this year’s squad were in year 7 and there is a great possibility that they may be able to come up here for the next 2 years, so it's a very positive result for us."
On behalf of the entire Maribyrnong community we congratulate the winner of the competition Westfield Sports from Sydney, and thank our girls for the amazing way that they have represented our school throughout the entire tournament.
