Alumni Report - WE 230423

As we have enjoyed a couple of weeks Holidays Our former and current MSA Athletes and staff have been turning up the heat right around the world.  Here are their results:

 

Basketball

Congratulations to our Basketball Head Coach Brenton O’Brien who coached the Victorian Country U18 squad in the National Championships over the holidays.  His team were defeated by the Victorian Metro team in the final but picked up the silver medal ahead of some more fancied State metro teams. A great effort by all.

 

Badminton

Gronya Somerville has finished off her European Tour winning the Dutch International Mixed Doubles with her new partner Kenneth Choo.  Gronya and Kenneth will look to continue to rise through the rankings with the hope of getting into the World Tour as a partnership.

 

Combat Sports

CombatAUS has finalised its Judo and Taekwondo athlete cohorts to train out of the National Performance Centre at the VIS in 2023.

Congratulations to the following Alumni, and current coaches who have made the squads.

  •  Judo: Danny Vojnikovich(Alumni), Ryley Rametta (Alumni & Current Coach)

  • Taekwondo: Leon Sejranovic(Alumni), Reba Stewart(Alumni), Will Afonczenko (Alumni & Current Coach)

Cricket

Current MSA Women’s cricket head coach Scott Shepherd has been appointed the new head coach of the Box Hill women’s program for the next two years. Scott has been the General Manager and Head Coach of Essendon’s women’s program for the past two seasons.

 

Equestrian

Current year 8 student Marly Wright has won the Interschool State Championships Intermediate Jumping title for 2023.  Marly defeated students from some large Private Schools and flew the flag high as MSA’s only competitor.

 

Swimming

Three current MSA Students competed at the Swimming Nationals on the Gold Coast during the Holidays.  Congratulations to Blake Hughes who competed in the Boys 15yo 200m Backstroke, 50 metre Backstroke and 100m Backstroke.  Yuan Lachama who was in the Boys 14yo 50m Freestyle and Enrico Villegas who was in the Boys 15yo 100m Freestyle and the Boys 14-18yo 4 x 100m Medley relay.

 

AFL

  • Fremantle v Western Bulldogs

Luke Ryan had 30 disposals and 619 meters gained for the Dockers in their loss to the Bulldogs by 49 points.

 

  • Port Adelaide v West Coast Eagles

Zak Butters had 9 kicks, 16 handballs and 6 tackles in Port Adelaide’s 40 point win over the Eagles.

 

  • GWS v Brisbane

Cam Rayner had 6 kicks 9 handballs and 6 marks with 1 goal 1 in Brisbane’s 21 point victory over the Giants.

 

  • Carlton v St Kilda

Josh Honey had 4 kicks and 6 handballs in Carlton loss to top of the table St Kilda by 21 points.

 

  • Gold Coast v Nth Melbourne

Touk Miller was injured in the Suns win over the Kangaroos by 43 points.  Before leaving the field with a suspected knee injury he had 13 possessions and 3 tackles. For the Kangaroos Kayne Turner had 10 possessions as did Paul Curtis who also had an inaccurate day in front of goal kicking 3 points.

 

A-League Men

Seb Pasquali started for Western United in their 3-1 loss to cross town rivals Melbourne City. With 1 game to go in the championship, Western United currently sit 4th on the table and could finish as high as 2nd depending on the result between 2nd and 3rd teams Adelaide United and Central Coast Mariners.

A-League Women

Naomi Thomas Chinnama and her Melbourne City A-league women’s team have been knocked out of the finals in a penalty shoot-out with long-time rivals Melbourne Victory.  With the teams locked together at 3 all after extra time, Victory won the shoot-out 4-1 to take the win in the Elimination final.

International Football

Polly Doran and her EPL Women’s championship team Crystal Palace defeated Lewes 4-0 in their game played on Sunday afternoon.  With only one match to go in the Championship, Crystal Palace currently sit sixth on the table and play fourth place Charlton in the final game of the year.

Connor Metcalfe came onto the ground in the 21st minute in FC St Pauli’s loss to Hamburger SV 4-3.  With 6 games to go in the competition, FC St Pauli currently sit 5th on the table some 14 points from Bundesliga 2 leaders Darmstadt.
