About the MSA Research Centre

The MSA Research Centre is the only research centre embedded within an Australian Specialist Sport School. Located within Maribyrnong Sports Academy (MSA) in Melbourne, the Centre operates in formal partnership with Victoria University to deliver evidence-based research that directly informs the development of high-performing youth athletes.

Established in 2023 in collaboration with Victoria University, the Centre was founded to bridge the gap between research and practice. By situating research within a daily high-performance school environment, the MSA Research Centre ensures scientific knowledge is not only generated, but meaningfully applied.

 Our Purpose

The MSA Research Centre adopts a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to improving youth athlete development. Our mission is to enhance current practice and positively influence both immediate performance and long-term athlete progression.

We take a holistic view of the youth athlete, integrating research across:

  • Physical development and athletic performance

  • Technical and tactical skill acquisition

  • Psychological development and wellbeing

  • Coaching practice and pedagogy

  • Injury prevention and rehabilitation

  • Exercise prescription

  • Academic engagement and performance

By embedding research within the applied sport setting, the Centre supports evidence-informed decision-making for coaches, teachers, practitioners, and sport organisations.

Research and Partnerships

Collaboration is central to the MSA Research Centre’s growth and impact. We maintain formal research partnerships with leading universities across Australia and internationally, strengthening the quality, scope, and translational impact of our work.

The Centre also plays a key role in research training and capacity building. Established Higher Degree by Research pathways enable PhD and Masters candidates to undertake applied research within a real-world high-performance youth sport environment. These pathways contribute to the development of the next generation of researchers and practitioner-scholars in youth athlete development.

Our Impact

By embedding research within a specialist sport school environment, the MSA Research Centre provides a unique model for integrating science, education, and performance. Our work supports:

  • Enhanced athlete development pathways

  • Improved coaching practice

  • Evidence-based decision-making in youth sport

  • Sustainable high-performance systems

The MSA Research Centre represents a forward-thinking model of applied research, where innovation is grounded in practice, and research meaningfully shapes the future of youth sport development
