Sports Director's Welcome
The Maribyrnong Sports Academy (MSA) is the first State Government Funded Specialist Sports School Program in Victoria. Established in 2006 the Academy is currently home to 550+ student-athletes who compete in a range of sports including the larger participation sports such as cricket, soccer, AFL and netball but also smaller sports including badminton, taekwondo and baseball/softball.
The Sports Academy provides a genuine high performance environment for students to thrive in both sport and education and achieve their dreams. This environment is underpinned by the Academy motto of ‘Pride in Performance’ and its core values of;
• Honesty
• Respect
• Community
• Leadership
• Determination
The high performance environment starts with the physical facilities which are of international standard, however the true strength of the program is the holistic approach to each student’s academic, athletic and personal development. This approach is delivered by a team of passionate, highly committed professionals, working together in an integrated manner.
Student-athletes within the Academy are coached, taught, trained and mentored on a daily basis by teachers, coaches, dietitians, psychologists & sports scientists which include 5 Olympians, 550+ AFL games playing experience, numerous National Representatives and individuals with significant experience working at the AIS, VIS, professional clubs and with professional athletes.
To further complement Academy staff numerous partnerships have been developed with organisations including Victoria University, Western Bulldogs FC, Victorian Institute of Sport and many state and national sporting organisations (click here for MSA Partners page).
From a sporting point of view, the Academy is achieving some amazing results in all sorts of areas. One indicator is the 180+ students who represented Victoria and/or Australia in National and International competition over the last 12 months.
Academically, the College is a VCE only school which supports student-athletes through an Advanced Curriculum Enrichment Program, 5 weekly academic reports, specific career counselling for athletes and an athlete friendly culture recognising the specific academic pressures on high level athletes. The College’s academic results are also very good with mean VCE results of over 30 for the last 4 years and the College’s best ever Year 12 results coming in 2017.
From any measure the Maribyrnong Sports Academy is a genuine sports institute operating within a school, and the high performance sport atmosphere can be felt the moment you walk into the facility. We look forward to continuing to help educate and develop Australia’s next generation of sporting stars and quality community citizens.
