Marby's latest world champion - Luke Plapp

Maribyrnong Sports Academy athlete Luke Plapp has hit a golden streak at the 2018 UCI Junior Track World Championships in Aigle, Switzerland, with two world titles and a bronze medal to his name.

Plapp deferred his VCE studies for 2018 to allow him to focus on the World Championships claiming a gold medal in the points race and also taking the gold with teammate Blake Quick in the Madison. His bronze medal came in the Men’s Team Pursuit. 

Australia as a team claimed three world titles, nine medals and a handful of world and Australian records at the event.

Luke revelled the next day to Cycling Australia's website that he celebrated his maiden World title by sleeping in his rainbow jersey. 

“I was so sweaty, and it was so tight and hard to put on the jersey. But I didn’t take it off for the next 12 hours and slept in it. I honestly could not stop smiling the whole day and night. Also, to receive all the support from back home was something else!”

Plapp dedicated the win to teammate James Moriarty who broke a collarbone in a training crash two days out from the start of competition.  “I would like to dedicate this race to James, this was meant to be his race,” explained Plapp. “I raced it on his behalf, and I’m sure he would have been in the same position as I would was in the race. It meant a lot to be able to win it for him, and I’m sure next year he will do it!

With Blake Quick, the pair won the Madison 47 points ahead of Russia and Denmark after figuring in all but two of the fourteen sprint decisions.

“The Madison has been my goal for so long,” revealed Plapp. “And to achieve it with such a fantastic mate was so special and once again having one of the previous best Madison riders in Matt Gilmore guiding us was unreal.

“You’d probably be able to tell after the 100 hugs and the celebrations after the race, that this one is going to take a while to sink in.

“I want to thank Matty Gilmore and Shane (Kelly) for coaching us over the last few months and Bernie for being an amazing team manager.  Also to the Brunswick Cycling Club and Cam McFarlane for all his support and guidance and for just keeping me enjoying my cycling. And of course mum and dad.”

Sports Academy and Downer Group to support Tiwi Island Kids

In June of this year, our AFL Academy students headed north for 7 days in Darwin which included a trip to the Tiwi Islands and a game against students from the Melville Island community.  During this game one of the Academy year 12 students David Fruscalzo decided to pass his boots onto his opponent from the game as all the Tiwi players played barefoot during the game.  Even our players played barefoot for the second half.  

As a result of this great gesture by David, AFL Academy coach Andrew Komp and student parent Angela Ballard have joined forces to send a whole heap of football gear to our friends on the Tiwi Islands.

With thanks to the Downer Group who have agreed to transport all the gear to the Tiwi Islands, Maribyrnong College students within the AFL and Football programs are being asked to bring their old boots into school for collection.  We are also collecting old footy jumpers, shorts and socks and giving the Kids on the Tiwi Islands a chance to dress like their favourite players.

Mr Komp has told the Academy website that the opportunity to do something for the Tiwi community is one that can't be missed, " Our game against the kids from the Tiwi Islands on our recent trip was a real eye opener for our students and staff.  While the community on Melville is fairly impoverished, every person on the island continually smiles and is just happy to be alive.  This really touched our travelling group and we all left the Island believing we could do more.  So this idea was born, and we hope we can make it an annual tradition."

"We are asking our student athletes from our AFL and Football programs to bring in their old boots that don't fit them anymore.  Instead of throwing them away, let's send them up North and give the kids up there a chance to live out their football dreams looking the part." 

Maribyrnong Sports Academy appreciates the support from the Downer Group and their Partnership demonstrates career pathways program, which is currently working with Nyangatjatjara College in the Northern Territory to create a work exposure program to educate the students about the businesses and careers outside their communities..

Six MSA Students make AFL U18 Vic Metro Squad

Maribyrnong Sports Academy has provided 6 players (2 former students and 4 current) to the Vic Metro squad for the 2018 AFL Under 18 National Carnival.

Jack Evans, Emerson Jeka, Zak Butters, Stefan Radovanovic, Buku Khamis and Jack Bytel have all been selected in the initial squad of 37 players.

Head coach of Maribyrnong Sports Academy’s AFL program Torin Baker says it’s a great validation for our Academy pathway. “It’s an excellent result not only for the players but for the program here at Maribyrnong Sports Academy. I know the boys have worked so hard to get in the squad and now they have it all in front of them over the next 4 weeks.”

Of the 37 players selected only 10 students come from outside the private and catholic school sector, with 6 of those 10 from Maribyrnong and 1 from Rowville Sports Academy.  Baker says the State School Sports Academy system continues to produce. “There does seem to be a bit of a weighting towards non-government schools but the fact that Maribyrnong Sports Academy has more kids in the squad than any other school is a real validation for what we do here and how our students go about their schooling.  This is another fantastic result for our Academy backing up on last year as well.”

The Vic Metro team is scheduled to play 2 of its 4 games interstate at Optus Stadium Perth and Spotless Stadium in Sydney. The remaining 2 games will be played at the MCG and Etihad Stadium. Baker admits it will be a tough schedule for those involved. “The first of the four games is this weekend in Perth with the Vic Metro team taking on the very strong West Australians. It’s expected most of the squad will get a run in the first two games before the squad will be cut down to 25 for the final two games against Vic Country and South Australia. I think most of our boys should get at least one game in the Championships, with Emerson being a bottom age player, and he has been in the AFL Academy, it will be a great result for him to have that one game, but I’d expect the other boys who are top age to play multiple games and some might play all.”

High Performance Manager at Maribyrnong Sports Academy Brent Vallance says the amount of work put into these boys since they started at the Academy has no doubt helped them along the way. “It’s not just a validation of what we do with these Students on a Phys Prep basis but we have had a couple of very good staff working with them along the way and it’s great for our partnership with AFL Victoria, an extension of that partnership we provide here with our Strength and conditioning. There is no surprise that some of our biggest users not only during school time but also in their own personal time of our facilities here at Maribyrnong are these 6 boys.”

42 Students from the AFL program here at Maribyrnong Sports Academy are set to embark on a 6-day tour of Darwin which will take in a game against a Tiwi Islands team as well as Sports and Cultural tours.

Maribyrnong Sports Academy is a part of Maribyrnong College, providing a Sport Specialist program to just under 600 Student/Athlete’s.  In the program student undertake their normal education day which includes ADP or Athlete Development Program.  ADP allows the students to partake in Strength and Conditioning work as well as having access to Dietitians and Sports Phycologists.
