Football

Seb Pasquali came into game in the 61st minute in Western United’s 1-0 loss to Brisbane Roar.

 

Connor Metcalfe started in St Pauli FC’s 5-0 win SV Sandhausen in the Bundesliga 2.

 

Polly Doran started for Crystal Palace in the Women’s EPL defeating Sheffield United 1-0.  

 

MelindaJ Barbieri started in Adelaide United’s 2 all draw with Newcastle. 

 

Naomi Chinnama’s Melbourne City had a 1 all draw with Sydney FC. 

 

Volleyball

Lorenzo Pope’s Modena Volleyball won the first game of their best of 3 Quarter Final 3-2 against Gas Sales Piacenza in the Italian SupaLega.  

 

AFL

Jack Bytel and Luke Ryan faced off in the St Kilda Fremantle match played at Marvel Stadium.  The Saints getting the win with Jack Bytel kicking a goal and having 15 disposals for the victors.  Luke Ryan had an amazing day with 37 disposals and 13 marks in the 15 point loss.

 

Paul Curtis scored 2 goals in North Melbourne’s 5 point win over the West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium.

 

Zak Butters had 24 Disposals and took 8 marks in Port Adelaide’s 54 point victory over Cam Rayner’s Brisbane Lions.  Rayner having 14 disposals and 3 tackles.

 

Meanwhile Gold Coast Captain and MSA Alumni Touk Miller had 29 disposals and 8 tackles in his teams 49 point loss to the Sydney Swans.

 

 

Cycling

Luke Plapp is riding in the Tour of Catalunya this week with his teammates for his professional team Ineos Grenadiers 

 

Cricket

Fergus O’Neill took 3/52 against WA in the final home and away game of the Sheffield Shield season bolstering his chances to play in the Shield Final this week.  Victoria takes on West Australia with both O’Neill and MSA Cricket coach Travis Dean expected to make the team. We wish them good luck.

 

Lacrosse

MSA Year 12 student Toby Townsend made the all-star team at the Box Lacrosse Junior Commonwealth tournament this past weekend. The games were hosted by Altona Lacrosse Club and consisted of teams from Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide.

 

After a round robin format, an all-star team was selected to represent Australia against a very competitive Canadian team in the showcase final. Toby scored 2 goals and assisted another in the final with Australian losing out to Canada.

Alumni Athletes going strong

Three of Maribyrnong Sports Academy’s past students are firing on all Cylinders in the world of Senior Athletics here in Australia.

Three of Maribyrnong Sports Academy’s past students are firing on all Cylinders in the world of Senior Athletics here in Australia.

The 2023 Chemist Warehouse Sydney Track Classic (a World Athletics Continental Tour - Challenger meet) and Australian Open 3000m Championships were run over the weekend at Homebush featuring Celeste Mucci in the 100m Hurdles, Jessie Andrew in the 400m and Cameron Searle in the men’s 400m.

 

Celeste Mucci ran a personal best and the 4th fastest female Australian time ever over the 100m hurdles running second in the final to her main rival Michelle Jenneke.  Celeste’s time of 12.84 now puts her above former MSA coach Pam Ryan in the all-time list and just behind Jenneke in second place, with Sally Pearson the fastest. 

 

Jessie Andrew has put her hand up for a debut in a senior Australian team after blitzing the field in the Women’s 400m.  Jessie time of 53.50 continues her solid form, and is just 13 hundredths of a second off her personal best time of 53.37 set in Canberra 6 weeks ago. 

 

Meanwhile Cameron Searle in also showing great form on the track with a 400m time of 46.95 placing him 6th in the final.  Cameron’s time sees him closing in on a hopeful start in a 4 x 400m team.

 

The Australian Athletics community turns its attention next to Queensland for the Brisbane Track Classic which is held on the 25th March.

Badminton - Oceania Championships

MSA past and present students have performed well at the Oceania Junior and Open Badminton championships last week held in Auckland.

Current Year 10 student Shrey Dhand brings home 4 medals from the Junior Championships:

·      Gold Medal in the Teams Event

·      Bronze in the Boys Singles

·      Bronze in the Boys Doubles

·      Bronze in the Mixed Doubles

 

Past Students and Olympians Jacob Schueler and Gronya Somerville also leave the Open tournament with medals.

 

·      Jacob won a Bronze medal in the men’s Singles

·      Gronya won a Bronze in the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
