AFL & AFLW Academy Program

Program Overview

The Maribyrnong Sports Academy AFL/AFLW program is one of Victoria's leading elite football programs, designed to support talented young athletes on their journey through the AFL talent pathway. As part of the renowned Maribyrnong Sports Academy, the program provides a high-performance environment that complements the development of emerging footballers aspiring to progress to NAB League, VFL, AFL, and AFLW opportunities.

Recognised as a premier AFL/AFLW Academy in Melbourne, the program combines expert coaching, athlete support services, and academic excellence to help student-athletes maximise their potential both on and off the field. The Academy develops well-rounded individuals who can successfully balance the demands of elite sport and education while preparing for future opportunities within Australian football.

Our Academy skill development sessions are conducted from 7:30am up to two mornings per week during school terms. These sessions are specifically designed to complement the afternoon and evening training commitments associated with NAB League pathway programs and other representative football opportunities, ensuring student-athletes can access additional development without impacting their club commitments.

As a leading high-performance football program, training focuses on the continual refinement of technical skills, decision-making, game awareness, and tactical understanding. Student-athletes participate in ball-centred activities and modified game scenarios that replicate match-day situations, enabling them to transfer their learning directly into competition. The coaching philosophy centres on developing intelligent footballers who can make effective decisions under pressure while continually improving their technical execution and understanding of the game.

A key strength of the Maribyrnong Sports Academy AFL/AFLW Academy is its holistic approach to elite athlete development. Student-athletes have access to a multidisciplinary team of specialist support staff who work closely with the football program to optimise performance and wellbeing.

Support services include:

  • Strength and conditioning

  • Performance psychology

  • Sports nutrition

  • Physiotherapy

  • Rehabilitation and injury management

  • Athlete wellbeing support

These services help students develop the physical, mental, and emotional skills required for long-term sporting success while supporting injury prevention, recovery, and overall athlete development.

As a leading sports high school in Melbourne, Maribyrnong College recognises the importance of balancing academic achievement with sporting excellence. MSA supports students in managing both commitments while developing strong organisational skills, resilience, leadership, and self-discipline.

Through quality coaching, specialist athlete support, and a commitment to educational success, the MSA AFL/AFLW Academy provides one of Victoria's premier AFL pathway programs, helping talented young footballers pursue their sporting ambitions while achieving success in the classroom and preparing for future opportunities both within and beyond the game.
