Once again we have seen some great individual performances by our MSA Alumni and some current students in the past week. Here is how they went.
Equestrian
Congratulations to Marly Wright who has taken out the Overall Champion trophy representing Maribyrnong Sports Academy at the Geelong Grammar Show Jumping Competition at Werribee with her horse Maeve Keeva Castiel.
Para Tennis
Current Year 8 student Jin Woodman has been competing at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Portugal. Jin and his doubles partner Benjamin Wenzal defeated the Brazilian pairing to help Australia wins its first round match 3-0 over Brazil. Australia then played the United States with Jin and his doubles partner Yassin Hill losing in straight sets. The USA team beat Australia 3-0. Australia finished second in their group round robin then went on to finish 4th in the tournament losing to Great Britain 3-0 in the semi’s, Jin losing his singles match in straight sets 6-1,6-2. The Aussies then lost to the Netherlands in the play off for 3rd and 4th. A great effort by Jin and his teammates.
Badminton
Gronya Somerville is currently representing Australia in the Sudirman Cup being played in Suzhou, China. Australia lost their first match of the tournament to Malaysia 5-0. Gronya played in both Mixed and Women’s doubles.
Australian Rules Football
Congratulations to Piper Dixon, Leivi Lane, Elle Price and Kiara Boyd who have all been selected in the SSV 15 and Under Girls Australian rules football team. The National Championships will be played later in the year in Ballarat. Kiara Boyd has also been selected in the SSV 15 and under Netball team to play in the Nationals in W.A.
International Football
Connor Metcalfe came on in the 77th minute in St Pauli FC’s nil all draw against Dusseldorf in the German Bundesliga 2.
AFL
Gold Coast Suns recorded a solid win against the West Coast Eagles. Rory Atkins had 18 disposals and 8 marks for the Suns.
Fremantle defeated the Sydney Swans by 17 points with Luke Ryan having 19 disposals and 10 marks for the Dockers.
Port Adelaide beat the Kangaroos by 70 points, Zak Butters having 32 possessions for the Power while Paul Curtis had 17 possessions and kicked 1 goal for North Melbourne.
Brisbane defeated the Bombers by 42 points with Cam Rayner amassing 20 possessions, 5 clearances and a goal for the Lions while Massimo D’Ambrosio was a late call up into the team having 9 disposals then was subbed off in the 7th min of the final quarter.
Adelaide defeated the Saints by 52 points with Jack Bytel getting 7 disposals and 3 tackles after coming on as the sub to replace the concussed Tim Membrey in the 3rd quarter.
Cycling
Luke Plapp was involved in a large crash on the first stage of the Tour de Hongrie which claimed him and Ineos Grenadiers teammate Egan Bernal with only one kilometre to go. Luke suffered a minor concussion and was unable to continue the race withdrawing at the end of the first day.
Cricket
Congratulations to MSA Cricket Alumni Tom Rogers, Fergus O’Neill and current MSA coach Travis Dean who have all received full contracts with Cricket Victoria for the upcoming 23/24 season. We also congratulate Dylan Brasher on receiving a Rookie Contract.
Athletics
Celeste Mucci is in Yokohama, Japan this week to compete in the 100m Hurdles at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix on Sunday.
