Weightlifting

Teagan Newman has finished second in the AWF Senior Championships held in Hawthorn on the weekend in the 76kgs division. Tegan had a best lift of 87kgs in the snatch competition and a clean and jerk of 104 kgs which was 2kgs off her PB.

 

Football

Annabel Martin has signed on for the Central Coast Mariners for the Women’s A-League for season 23/24.  After starting her professional career as a 16yo for the Melbourne Victory back in the 2015/16 season, she moved to Newcastle after 4 seasons with the Victory, but an ACL injury cut her game time with the Jets.  Annabel then signed a 1-year deal with the Wellington Phoenix.

Athletics

Celeste Mucci has run a blistering 12.87 in a heat of the 100m hurdles at the CITIUS Meeting in Switzerland over the weekend, a time which is only 0.03 second off her personal best.  This time would suggest that Celeste is in amazing form heading into the World Championships in 2 weeks’ time in Budapest, Hungry.  Celeste will represent Australia in the women’s 100m hurdles and the 4 x 100m relay.  This is Celeste’s 3rd Senior World Championships.

 

Badminton

Gronya Somerville arrived back in Australia last week to play in the Sathio Group Australian Open, a super 500 event.  In both the women’s and mixed doubles, Gronya and her Partners were defeated in the round of 32.  Jacob Schueler was knocked out in the Qualifying rounds.

 

Taekwondo

Leon Sejranovic and Reba Stewart have both claimed gold medals in the Kimunyong Cup in Muju, South Korea over the weekend.  While 7 Australians won medals in the event Raba and Leon were the only 2 to win Gold. 

 

NRLW

 The West Tigers had their first loss for the season going down to the Canberra Raiders 28-22.  MSA Alumni Najvada George played 70 mins of the game receiving 34 passes and giving off 3 in the Lock position.  She made 26 tackles, missed 2 and had 1 tackle break while advancing 173m during the game.

 

Cricket

Current students Mitch Jamieson & Bailey Toseland and former students Arjun Sehrawat & Darcy Gregory-Francis have been selected in the 24-man men’s U19 Victorian State Squad.  Ruby Gibson, Mia Gordon & Pearl Kapoor have been selected for the Women’s U19 Victorian State Squad.  We congratulate them all for making the squad and hope they make the final team when selected.

 

Golf

Stephanie Bunque has missed the cut in the Smorum Ladies Open played in Denmark after shooting a 7 over par in the first 2 days.  Steph now moves to Sweden for the next 3 weeks and will partake in this week’s Big Green Egg Swedish Open at the Varbergs Golf Klubb. From there Steph will hopefully receive an invite into the PGA Championship the following week.

 

Basketball

Former MSA Basketball athlete Johnny Furphy has signed with the University of Kansas Basketball program. The Jaybirds program is one of the most prestigious in the States.  At 2 metres tall the playmaker has been working on his game at the NBA Academy Centre of Excellence here in Australia for the past few months, and last month had outstanding tournament in the NBA Academy Showcase games in Atlanta, which raised the eyes of a few recruiters.

Cycling

At the World Road Cycling Championship in Glasgow, Scotland, Luke Plapp was part of an Australian team which saw a majority of riders not finish the event.  Luke had an issue with the first climb having done a lot of work in the lead up to the mountain and dropped off the back of the peloton.

 

AFL

 

Richmond v Bulldogs

Rhylee West had 16 possessions and kicked 2 goals 2 for the Bulldogs who had a comfortable victory over Richmond by 55 points.

 

Essendon v West Coast

Peter Wright had 13 disposals and kicked 1 goal 3 in Essendon’s 1 point victory over the Eagles.

 

Adelaide v Gold Coast

Rory Atkins has continued his great 2023 form with 25 touches in the Suns 28-point loss to the Crows.

 

Geelong v Port Adelaide

Zak Butters may have secured some more Brownlow votes after having 30 touches and 6 tackles while gaining 656m in their loss to the Cats by 12 points.

 

Kangaroos v Melbourne

Paul Curtis kicked 1 goal 2 and had 7 possessions in the Kangaroos 32-point loss to the Demons. Joel Smith had 7 possessions for Melbourne.

 

Fremantle v Brisbane

Luke Ryan had 21 possessions and gained 399m in Freo’s 3-point loss to Brisbane. Cam Rayner had 19 disposals and took 12 marks for the Lions.
