Should I take a multivitamin?
Multivitamins generally only provide a small amount of the nutrients we require. They should not be used as a substitute for a healthy diet and eating whole foods is the best way to achieve nutritional adequacy.
Specific vitamin and mineral supplements may be needed for people who are unable to meet their recommended dietary intake through foods. E.g. a vegan may need a B12 or iron supplement if their blood tests show a deficiency. Medical supplements should only be taken under the guidance of a qualified medical practitioner or dietitian.
