Commonwealth Games Selection
Comm Games Selections for our Badminton players, World Uni Games for our Athletes and an AFL Rookie Mid Season selection, all in all just a normal day for our MSA Alumni.
It’s been a solid week for MSA Alumni being named in National teams or being selected for professional squads.
Badminton
Congratulations to Gronya Summerville and Jacob Schueler on being selected in the Australian Commonwealth Games Badminton team. Both Jacob and Gronya had a fantastic National Championships winning gold in their events and have continued that form since. The Commonwealth games are on in Birmingham UK from the 28th July to the 8th August this year.
Athletics
Athletics Australia has named Celeste Mucci and Cameron Searle in their ceremonial Australian team for the 2022 FISU World University Games.
The team won’t compete due to the Covid situation in China but AA announced it would still select a team, honouring athletes with Australian competition kit in recognition of their achievements.
Celeste was selected to represent Australia in the 100 meters and 100 meter hurdles while Cameron would have run in the 400 meters.
Meanwhile in US College Sports, 2017 MSA Graduate and University of New Mexico athlete Amelia Mazza-Downie has qualified for the 5000 and 10000 meter runs at the NCAA national Championships.
AFL
Massimo D’Ambrosio has been selected by the Essendon Football Club with pick 3 in the AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft. Massimo has had a fantastic season playing for Richmond in the VFL and the Western Jets in the NAB League where he has averaged 27 possessions in his 4 games.
Massimo follows in the footsteps of Carlton Defender and 2016 MSA graduate Jordan Boyd who was also selected in the Mid-Season rookie draft last year.
Alumni Performances WE 29/05/22
Once again our MSA Alumni put in some amazing performances here at home and around the world. Have a look at what they achieved this week.
A-League Grand Final
Congratulations to Rhys Bozinovski and the Western United FC for winning the A-League premiership against cross town rivals Melbourne City 2-0. Connor Metcalfe played his final game for Melbourne City before heading off to Germany to play in the Bundesliga.
AFL
Cam Rayner had 25 disposals and kicked a goal in Brisbane’s defeat of the GWS Giants.
Zak Butters dominated in Port Adelaide’s win over Peter Wrights Essendon. Butters had 24 disposals and kicked a goal in their win
Luke Ryan helped his Fremantle Dockers defeat the previously undefeated Melbourne FC with an impressive display of footy. Luke had 29 possessions and 14 marks
Buku Khamis kicked 1 goal 2 and Riley West continues to play well with 13 touches and 2 goals in the Western Bulldogs thrashing of the West Coast Eagles in Perth
Touk Miller led the way for his Gold Coast suns with 24 disposals and 6 tackles in their defeat of the Hawks by 67 points at TIO Stadium in Darwin
Paul Curtis kicked a goal and Kane Turner had 14 touches for North Melbourne in the Kangaroos loss to St Kilda by 53 points at Marvel Stadium.
All eyes now are on the mid-season AFL draft where 2021 graduate Massimo D’Ambrosio is expected to be picked up by an AFL Club
Cycling
Luke Plapp finished third in the Tour of Norway giving him his first Pro GC Podium.
Paralympic Sports
Congratulations to MSA Strength and Conditioning coach Ben Sortino, who was a part of the Australian Wheelchair Basketball teams Gold Medal win over Iraq 56-50 in the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Asia Oceania Championships in Phuket
MSA Baseballers in the lime light
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for our MSA Baseball program with State and National Championships and the naming of 2 of our students into an Australian squad.

Firstly congratulations are to be given to year 11 student Declan Spiers and year 9 student Jayden Kim for being named in the Baseball Australia U18 World Cup squad which will head to America in August. They will be based at Perfect Game’s Fort Myers facility for a final selection camp.
The final team will then depart for the September 9-18 World Cup in Bradenton and Sarasota.
Jayden, Declan and our head coach Scott Meager spent a week during the term 1 holidays at the AIS in Canberra for the selection trials.
Three year 8 student baseballers Roman Coote, Oliver Bergin and Sam Land represented the Twins Charter at the National Championships in Mildura for the Intermediate league championships. The Twins defeated Victoria’s other team at the Nationals the Southern Mariners to claim 3rd in the tournemant. Oliver hitting a home run for the Twins in the Bronze medal match.
Meanwhile Josh Bence played for the Twins in the Senior League National Championships in Geelong.
Maribyrnong College won the Intermediate School Sport Victoria State Championships defeating Frankston High School in the final played at Cheltenham 6-0. 5 players from our baseball program Andy Land, Jayden Kim, Lauchlan Schumann, Dylan Brooks and Josh Bence were joined by Cricketers Bailey Toesland, Sam Syan and George Eaves and Volleyballer Dan Nguyen to claim their 2nd state championship in 4 years (No championships were played in 2020 and 2021).
