VIc Metro and Interleague results

Plenty of MSA Student Athletes played rep footy over the Queens Birthday long weekend.

MSA AFL student athletes Luca Grego and Jayden Nguyen have performed well for the U16 AFL Vic Metro team in their game against Vic Country over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend.

Luca was captain for the Vic Metro team and shone through the midfield as he led his team to a 27 point victory at Icon Park.  Missing a goal on the run in the third quarter, Luca made up for it kicking a goal in the fourth quarter at a critical time for his team.

Jayden played on the wing and made the position his own running hard to both ends of the ground.  Jayden kicked the first goal of the game for Vic Metro and continued to drive low and hard at the ball all game while backing his speed on the outside as well.

Meanwhile Maribyrnong College and Academy athletes Jaime Starzer, Jackson Barber, Tom McGuane, James Manfre and Arden Stevens all played their roles for the EDFL U15 Interleague team which defeated the SMJFL over the long weekend break by 98 points on Monday and the WRFL by 3 goals on the Saturday.

Commonwealth Games Selection

Comm Games Selections for our Badminton players, World Uni Games for our Athletes and an AFL Rookie Mid Season selection, all in all just a normal day for our MSA Alumni.

It’s been a solid week for MSA Alumni being named in National teams or being selected for professional squads.

Badminton

Congratulations to Gronya Summerville and Jacob Schueler on being selected in the Australian Commonwealth Games Badminton team.  Both Jacob and Gronya had a fantastic National Championships winning gold in their events and have continued that form since.  The Commonwealth games are on in Birmingham UK from the 28th July to the 8th August this year.

Athletics

Athletics Australia has named Celeste Mucci and Cameron Searle in their ceremonial Australian team for the 2022 FISU World University Games.

The team won’t compete due to the Covid situation in China but AA announced it would still select a team, honouring athletes with Australian competition kit in recognition of their achievements.

Celeste was selected to represent Australia in the 100 meters and 100 meter hurdles while Cameron would have run in the 400 meters.

Meanwhile in US College Sports, 2017 MSA Graduate and University of New Mexico athlete Amelia Mazza-Downie has qualified for the 5000 and 10000 meter runs at the NCAA national Championships.

AFL

Massimo D’Ambrosio has been selected by the Essendon Football Club with pick 3 in the AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.  Massimo has had a fantastic season playing for Richmond in the VFL and the Western Jets in the NAB League where he has averaged 27 possessions in his 4 games.

Massimo follows in the footsteps of Carlton Defender and 2016 MSA graduate Jordan Boyd who was also selected in the Mid-Season rookie draft last year.
