Football

Congratulations to Connor Metcalfe who has once again been selected in the Socceroos squad, this time for the upcoming London internationals against England at Wembley Stadium and New Zealand in Brentford.  Meanwhile Connor scored for his Bundesliga 2 club FC St Pauli in the 95th minute of their 5-1 win over Nurnberg.

 

Polly Doran scored 1 of the 4 goals scored by Chrystal Palace in their 4-0 win over Blackburn Rover.  Her goal in the 71st minute of the game was from an assist in front of goal and Polly made it look easy.

 

Hockey

Cooper Burns and Connor Otterbach have both played for HC Melbourne in their opening game of the 2023 Men’s JDH Hockey One League.  The season opener was away to the Tassie Tigers with Connor scoring the opening goal for HC Melbourne on the way to a 4-1 victory.  Former Olympian and MSA PE Teacher Andrew Smith has taken the role of Head Coach with the team with Nye Roberts also a member of the 22-man squad.

 

Congratulations to Cooper and Nye who have also been selected in the Burras U12 team to play in the Sultan of Johor Tournament as preparation for the Junior World Cup taking place later this year.

 

Judo

Over the School Holidays 2 of our current students went extremely well in Judo Competition here in Australia with the National School Championships followed by the Queensland Open (National Event Series).

 

Year 8 student Akos Kelly won a Gold Medal at the National school champs and Silver at the Queensland Open in the Senior Boys Category.  While Year 12 student Ruby Gojevic won a Bronze at the National Schools, a gold medal in Queensland in the Juniors and was placed 5th at the Queensland Open Senior Women’s competition.

 

We also note a fantastic effort by former student Danny Vojnikovich who won gold in the junior and senior men division at Queensland Open for his first competition back after ACL surgery. Danny has now been selected to represent Australia at the Pacific Games in November.

Ryley Rametta recently competed at Pan-American Oceania Junior Championships in Canada where she won Silver.   From this performance Ryley was selected in the Australian Judo team that will compete at the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands in November.   This will be the first time Australians have competed in Judo at these Games.

 

Basketball

Congratulations to Sa Pilimai who was part of the Australian Under 16 team to win a gold medal at the Asian Cup.  Sa, who is now a part of the Centre of Excellence in Canberra has had a growth spurt and is now 7 foot 2 or 218cm.

 

Golf

Our current golfing students have done very well at the Junior Vic open.  Charlie Roylance won the Boys U16 event while Kirk Kryskow won the U14 event.  Seabil Leong finished 5th in the U16 Girls event.

AFL

Zak Butters won his first John Cahill Medal for Port Adelaide.  This tops off an amazing year – Zak was awarded All-Australian selection; AFL Coaches’ Association Player of the Year; Most Courageous Award and finished equal-fourth in the Brownlow Medal.

 

AFLW – Round 6

Western Bulldogs v Carlton – Carlton by 19 points.

Bulldogs – Jess Fitzgerald collected 7 disposals and kicked 1 goal 1.

 

Narrm v Adelaide Crows – Crows won by 10 points.

Narrm – Libby Birch had 6 disposals, 2 marks ad 3 tackles for the match.

 

St Kilda v Hawthorn – St Kilda by 9 points.

St Kilda – Georgia Patrikios had 17 disposals and 5 tackles in the Saints win.

Hawthorn – Charlotte Baskaran had 14 disposals, 1 mark and 12 Tackles for the Hawks.

 

Port Adelaide v Sydney – Swans by 15 points.

Sydney – Aliesha Newman had a quiet day with just 4 possessions.

 

Essendon v Geelong – Bombers by 10 points.

Essendon – Georgia Nanscawen had 25 disposals, 2 marks and 7 tackles for the victors.

Geelong – Georgie Prespakis had 26 disposals, 10 clearances and 7 tackles for the Cats.

 

Richmond v Gold Cost Suns – Suns by 1 point.

Richmond – Monique Conti had 22 disposals, 5 marks and 2 tackles for the Tigers.

 

Walyalup (Fremantle) v North Melbourne – Kangaroos by 45 points.

North Melbourne – Amy Smith had 10 disposals and 5 tackles for North in their win.

Our MSA Alumni have had a couple of busy weeks while we have been away on Holiday.  Let’s catch up on what they have been doing.

Football

Polly Doran and Naomi Chinnama have been spending time with the U23 Australian Women’s football team in Europe for the past couple of weeks.  During that time Australia beat Scotland 1-0 with Polly Doran scoring the match winner in the second half.  Meanwhile we say congratulations to Naomi who has resigned with Melbourne City for this years A-League Women’s competition.

 

Connor Metcalfe has scored one of the goals of the season for FC St Pauli in the Bundesliga 2 competition.  FC St Pauli defeated Holstein Kiel 5-1, that match played 2 weeks ago.  FC St Pauli are currently on top of the table after 8 matches.

 

Basketball

As the NBL season gets underway, great news for MSA Alumni Zac Triplett who has been elevated to the main roster for Melbourne United having been on the list as a development player.

 

Badminton

Gronya Somerville and her women’s doubles partner lost to an American pairing in the semi-finals at the Peru challenge in Lima.  Gronya heads home now for her next event, which is in Bendigo, Victoria.

 

Cricket

Tom Rogers and Fergus O’Neil are a part of the Victorian one-day team playing in the Marsh Cup.  The Bushrangers have started well beating Tasmania in the first match.  Tom Rogers made 45 off 49, while Fergus made 5 no and took 1 for 36 with the ball.

In game 2 Victoria beat New South Wales with Tom making 38 off 31 while Fergus took 2/40.

Collingwood v Brisbane – Pies by 4 points

Cam Rayner had 11 disposals, 2 marks and a tackle.

Geelong v Melbourne – Demons by 49

Georgie Prespakis – 18 disposals, 7 tackles and 5 clearances for Geelong.

Libby Birch – 8 disposals and 1 tackle for Melbourne.

Monique Conti – 30 Disposals, 9 tackles and 9 clearances for the Tigers.

Badminton

Gronya Somerville made it through to the round of 16 in the Guatemalan Open in the Women’s Doubles with her teammate Caitlyn EA.  In the Mixed doubles Gronya and her partner Kenneth Choo won the bronze medal. 

 

Jacob Schueler lost his round 32 singles match at the Indonesian Masters.

Football

Congratulations to Polly Doran and Naomi Thomas-Chinnama for being selected in the Football Australia U23 National Women’s Team squad which will play 2 games in the upcoming weeks against Scotland and AC Milan’s women’s team.

 

Hockey

The Altona Hockey club has been knocked out of the Victorian Hockey Premier league, losing its semi-final to Doncaster 6-5.  MSA Alumni Cooper Burns scored 3 goals for Altona while National Development Squad player Connor Otterbach didn’t play for Altona due to a torn Hamstring he sustained at an Australian camp.  The injury has kept him out of the game for nearly 2 months.

Judo

Ryley Rametta competed at the Pan American Oceania Championships in Calgary, Canada this week.  Ryley defeated Nauana Silva from Brazil to take out the Silver Medal in the U63kg category – this performance places Ryley 8th in the world – an outstanding performance!

We congratulate Ryley and Danny Vojnikovich who have both been selected along with 26 other Athletes to represent Australia in the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands in November.

AFLW

Richmond v Adelaide

Monique Conti had 29 disposals, 5 tackles and kicked a goal in Richmond’s disappointing loss to the Adelaide Crows by 29 points. Monique was also named in the AFLW round 2 team of the week in the midfield.

 

Sydney v Geelong

Aliesha Newman kicked 3 goals 1, had 6 disposals and 4 tackles in Sydney’s 27-point loss at home to the Cats.  Georgie Prespakis had 15 disposals and an amazing 12 tackles for the victors.

 

Western Bulldogs v Hawthorn

Charlotte Baskaran has continued her good form to the start of the season having 16 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles in the Hawks 7-point win over the Dogs.  Jess Fitzgerald tried hard to help get the Bulldogs over the line with 20 possessions, 4 marks and 5 tackles.

 

Nth Melbourne v Carlton

Amy Smith had 8 disposals and 7 tackles in North Melbourne’s 60-point victory over the Blues.

 

Essendon v St Kilda

Essendon held on for a 12-point victory at Windy Hill over the Saints in its first senior club game at its spiritual home for 32 years.  For the Bombers Georgia Nanscawen had 13 disposals and 6 tackles while Georgia Patrikios finished off with 15 touches and 2 tackles

 

GWS v Melbourne

Melbourne claimed their 2nd win of the season by defeating GWS by 77 points on the road.  For the Demons Libby Birch had 6 disposals and a tackle, with the Giants only taking the ball inside 50, 29 times for the game.

 

AFL Finals

Collingwood v Melbourne

Joel Smith lined up for the Demons in their 7-point loss to the Pies.  Joel had 11 disposals, 1 goal and 5 marks.

 

Brisbane v Port Adelaide

Zak Butters had a solid game in a losing team with 29 disposals, 7 tackles and gained 599m for the Power in their 48-point loss to the Lions.  Cam Rainer kicked 3 goals 1 behind and had 16 possessions for Brisbane who now go straight into the Preliminary final.
