Hockey

MSA Alumni Cooper Burns and Nye Roberts have represented Australia at the 2023 Sultan of Johor Cup U21 tournament in Malaysia. The Australians losing the final to Germany 3-1 in the shootout after the scores were locked at nil all at the final whistle.  Cooper shot 4 goals in the tournament.

 

Meanwhile in the 2023 Men’s JDH Hockey One League Conner Otterbach and his HC Melbourne team went down to Brisbane Blaze 3-1.

 

Cricket

Bailey Toseland has captained an Australian indigenous cricket team to victory against an MCC team at the MCG.  The indigenous team won by 6 runs with Bailey winning the toss and electing to bat.  Bailey took a wicket with the ball.

 

Basketball

Johnny Furphy played his first game with the Kansas Jayhawks in the NCAA division 1 game against North Carolina Central Eagles.  The number 1 seeded Jayhawks won the game 99-56 with Johnny getting 17 minutes on the court scoring 6 points and getting 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

 

Cycling

Two-time Australian National Cycling champion Luke Plapp has left his professional team Ineos Grenadier and has moved to the Australian team on a four-year deal.  Luke is one of the hottest young talents on the World tour and is proud to be a part of the GreenEDGE Cycling team.

 

A League Men

Seb Pasquali came on in the 72nd min for Western United in their loss to Macarthur 1-0.

 

International Football

Bundesliga 2 Top of the ladder side FC St Pauli has defeated SV Elversberg 2-0 over the weekend.  Connor Metcalfe started for the victors being subbed out of the game in the 69th minute.

 

Polly Doran received a yellow card in Crystal Palace’s 3-0 victory over Watford in the FA WSL 2.  Crystal Palace now sit 4th on the Division 2 table.

 

AFLW

Gold Coast Suns v Essendon – Suns by 14

Essendon – Georgia Nanscawen had 23 disposals and 12 tackles.

 

Western Bulldogs v North Melbourne – North Melbourne by 46 Points

Bulldogs – Jess Fitzgerald had 17 disposals, 5 tackles and 3 marks

Kangaroos – Amy Smith had 14 disposals , 5 tackles and 3 marks

 

Geelong v Hawthorn – Geelong by 40 points

Geelong – Georgie Prespakis had 35 disposals, 2 tackles and a mark in a dominating effort.

Hawthorn – Charlotte Baskaran had 8 disposals and 7 tackles.

 

Brisbane v Melbourne – Lions by 25 points

Melbourne – Libby Birch had 9 disposals and 4 marks.

 

Carlton v St Kilda – St Kilda by 20 points

St Kilda – Georgia Patrikios had 25 disposals, 4 tackles and 6 marks.

 

Collingwood v Richmond – Tigers by 52

Richmond – Monique Conti had 34 disposals, 8 tackles, 1 mark with 615m gained. She also kicked a goal for the Tigers from 45 out on the run.

 

Fremantle v Sydney Swans – Swans by 22

Sydney Swans  - Aliesha Newman had 5 disposals and 3 tackles in the Swans win.

Hockey

HC Melbourne have defeated the Perth Thunder sticks 6-2.  Connor Otterbach scored 2 goals in the victory.  Cooper Burns and Nye Roberts did not play for HC Melbourne as they are in Singapore with the Australian U23 team in the lead up tournament to the U21 World Cup.

 

Golf

Stephine Bunque competed in the Hero Women’s Indian Open missing the cut with a pair of 77’s. Steph saying on Instagram “Stings to have a couple of bad holes derail an entire tournament, but still always trying to find the positives.”  Steph is now preparing for the Australian Open which is being played in Sydney in 4 weeks’ time. 

 

Cricket

Fergus O’Neill has made his debut first class 50 in a Shield match against NSW.  Batting for Victoria who won by 205 runs, Fergus made 7 in the first innings and 70 not out in the second innings to add to his bowling figures of 4/23 in the 1st and 1/32 in the second.  He dismissed Moises Henriques and Nathan Lyon in the 1st innings.

 

A-League

Sebastian Pasquale came on for Western United in the 46th minute in their disappointing 5-0 loss to the Western Sydney Wanderers.

 

FC St Pauli def Karlsruher 2-1.  Connor Metcalfe played most of the game for the victors, coming off in the final few minutes.

 

AFLW Round 9

 

Melbourne V Fremantle – Demons by 33 points

Melbourne - Libby Birch had 11 disposals.

 

St Kilda def Brisbane Lions by 21 points

St Kilda – Georgia Petrikios had 18 disposals and a goal.

 

Essendon def Carlton by 32 points

Essendon - Georgia Nanscawen had 18 disposals, 8 tackles and 6 clearances.

 

West Coast lost to the Western Bulldogs by 8 points.

Western Bulldogs – Jess Fitzgerald had 14 disposals and 9 tackles.

 

Geelong def Richmond by 38 points

Richmond – Monique Conti had 31 disposals, 6 tackles and 7 clearances.

Geelong - Georgie Prespakis had 27 disposals and 9 clearances

 

Sydney def Collingwood by 19 points

Sydney - Aliesha Newman had 9 disposals and kicked a goal.

 

North Melbourne lost to Adelaide by 3 points.

Congratulations to MSA Alumni Reba Stewart who has been selected for the Australian team that will compete at the Pacific Games in November.

 

Badminton

 Gronya Somerville lost the Mixed doubles final with partner Kenneth Choo for the second week in a row, this time at the Sydney International.  They lost to the same pairing from Chinese Taipei 21-12, 14-21, 11-21

 

Football

Polly Doran’s Crystal Palace Women’s team were defeated by Charlton 3-2

 

Connor Metcalfe came on in the 46 min in FC St Pauli’s 2 all draw with Paderborn.
